SUBJECT:        New - Ontario Area Code overlay and 10-digit mandatory dialling

 

 

With the growing popularity of new communications services, the demand for new numbers will soon exceed the supply in certain regions.  As a result, the Canadian numbering administrator (CAN) must issue new area codes and implement mandatory 10- digit dialling for all local communications in selected areas effective March 19^th 2011.  During a three-month grace period, starting on March 19^th 2011, callers will be reminded to include the area code when making local calls.  After June 19^th 2011, only local calls dialled with all 10 digits will be connected.

 

10-Digit dialling

In the regions served by the 705 area code in Ontario, 10-digit dialling will be adopted for all local calls starting on March 19^th 2011, the beginning of the grace period.

 

New area code overlay

A new area code will be launched: The new area code 249 will be added in Ontario, in addition to the current 705 area code.  There will be no change for current numbers.  This new area code will only be assigned to new telephone numbers.

 

IMPORTANT NOTE:  The following changes will take effect starting June 2010

JUNE & JULY 2010 issues

-          All listings and Open Trademark TSLs/TALs already worked or left for renewal will be automatically converted to a 10-digit format for impacted directories.

-          CMRs should update their national order records for future orders.

-          For orders yet to be worked, Yellow Pages Group would ask that the CMRs include the 10-digit format.

-          All other advertising, e.g. Informational (HS) and Display Ads, will have to be adjusted by the CMR to add the area code.  Therefore renewals will have to be re-worked.

 

Alpha (White) directory sections:

 

JUNE 2011 issues

-          In directories where two area codes (705 and 249) co-exist, only the less frequently occurring area code (249) will be printed with business and residential listings.

-          All white pages listings already worked or left for renewal will be automatically converted to a 10-digit format for impacted directories.  CMRs should update their national order records for future orders.

-          For orders yet to be worked, Yellow Pages Group would ask that the CMRs include the 10-digit format.

-          It is the CMR's responsibility to add the area code to all new, modified, or renewed white pages Specialty Products.

 

IMPORTANT NOTES:

1. Effective immediately, it will be the CMR's responsibility to add the area code to all new, modified or renewed Informationals and Display Ads, closed Trademarks, and Specialty Products.
2. Remember, all artwork must be checked, including the text lines of informational space ads, for secondary telephone numbers that require the area code to be added.

-          Note:  There may need to be modifications due to spacing limitations, e.g. the area code may cause line overruns in the Informationals.

3. National orders should already contain ten digits, but CMRs should review their orders to ensure accuracy.
4. For those directories that are still open, CMRs should be sending new art as necessary.

 

** All of the above information also applies for 807 area code directories.

** Although 807 area code is NOT moving to 10-digit dialling this year, we WILL be converting our Yellow directories (highlighted in red) so we are prepared when the change does take effect.  

The 807 area code is the only one in Ontario remaining with 7-digit dialling and we know it will be changed to 10-digit dialling in the next few years.
