Specifications & Guidelines
  • Up to two logos are permissible in an artwork HS, if they originate in art form or velox format.
  • If two logos are utilized, they must appear side by side and can't appear in different locations within the ad.
  • The logo(s) do not have to match the finding line but the advertiser must be authorized to use any national logos he does not own.
  • Text, addresses, and/or telephone numbers may appear above,  below, or adjacent to an illustration in artwork, space permitting.
  • An illustration may appear close to the left or right borders (top, middle, or bottom) or in the center of the ad (top, middle, or bottom)
  • An illustration or logo containing words, letters, or numerals which might be confused with text requires a border (unless the design itself encloses the type)  A one point rule is the standard border.
  • The overall dimensions of an illustration cannot exceed 1" deep x 1-1/2" wide or 1-1/2" deep x 1" wide.  If you use the 1-1/2" deep x 1" wide, it will decrease the lines of text available.
  • Areas for illustrations are screened at 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, and 70% as appropriate and screens at 85 lines per inch.
  • Logos may appear in two (2) colors.  (Black is counted as one color)
  • Only one color may be used in the text and it must be black and/or one of the colors appearing in the logo.
  • Photos of people, places and things may be in the logo.  These photos will be set in black and white and will be reduced to fit the logo size requirement.
General Rules for counting text in Artwork HSA's
There are many variables to consider concerning the amount of text that will fit in HSA's.  How will the logo be laid out, horizontally or vertically?  Do you want text next to the logo?  With the text be in color?

In an attempt to give some rules of thumb to clarify this situation, the following assumptions have been made to support the information provided below.
  • All text is considered black (Color requires more space between the lines of text)
  • The finding line does not overrun
  • All text appears under the logo
  • The phone number is centered and large
  • Text will range from a minimum of 6 pt to a maximum of 16 pt in size (Be aware that if you select 16 pt type, you will only get one or two words on a line in a 4 or 5 column book.
  • The size and position of the logo effects the amount of space that can be allotted to text.  (see examples below)
Example:  3HS w/Artwork -  # of lines of text
Horizontal Logo w/ 6 pt font = 6 lines of text
Horizontal Logo w/ 16 pt font = 3 lines of text
Vertical Logo w/ 6 pt font = 3 lines of text
Vertical Logo w/ 16 pt font = 1 line of text

Display Anchor 3HS Specifications
Each Anchor Space listing must contain specific reference to Anchor Line information. For example:
  • The anchor phrase must be preceded by a star.
  • Anchor Line must read "See Display Ad This Classification", and
  • A2HS - A4HS = 7 pt type
  • Anchor Line cannot make reference to advertising appearing under a different heading.
Lines of text
Below is the maximum # of lines permitted for 3HS Anchor Space listing (not including the allowed Anchor Line and a single line address/telephone number.)

Anchor 3HS lines of text
# of text lines allowed is = 11
# of "all capitals" text lines allowed is = 5

Overruns:  One line of text must be removed for each listing or address overrun (too many letters and for each additional telephone number (AL) that is listed).
